MIL-PRF-85582

MIL-PRF-85582 is a military performance specification relating waterborne, two-component epoxy coatings. The products conforming to this specification are primarily used for corrosion protection, chemical resistance and solvent resistance on aircraft and other military equipment. The MIL-PRF-85582 formula, unlike many traditional coatings that use volatile organic solvents, uses water as its primary carrier, making it more environmentally friendly and less hazardous to handle. This specification is commonly used in the aerospace and defence industries to protect aluminium and other metallic surfaces from corrosion and harsh environmental conditions, such as extreme temperatures and humidity. The coatings must adhere to a maximum volatile organic compound (VOC) content of 340 grams per litre or 2.8 pounds per gallon. There are various spec types and classes for this spec which will be explained below. Please see the quick guide to the most popular class/type combinations at the bottom of the page.

Key Features of MIL-PRF-85582

  • Product Type: It is an epoxy-based primer (which provides excellent adhesion and corrosion resistance)

  • Waterborne: MIL-PRF-85582 is formulated as a waterborne epoxy primer. This means that it has a reduced level of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it environmentally friendlier than solvent-based primers

  • Components: It is a two-component system:

Component A: The base (epoxy resin)
        Component B: The catalyst (hardener)

  • Corrosion Resistance: Provides superior resistance to corrosion, making it suitable for high-performance aircraft applications where long-term protection is essential

  • Chemical Resistance: The primer also has excellent resistance to various chemicals, oils, and solvents

  • Compatibility: It is designed to be used in conjunction with MIL-PRF-23377 primers and other high-performance topcoats, often as part of a system that includes a topcoat like MIL-PRF-85285, a polyurethane enamel

  • Adhesion: Provides strong adhesion to a variety of substrates, especially metals like aluminium and steel

  • Flexibility: This primer maintains flexibility, which is crucial for aircraft skins and other components that might experience stress and flexing

Spec Versions

MIL-PRF-85582E is the most recent version of the specification, where MIL = Military PRF = performance specification 85582 is the unique identification number and E is the version.

MIL-PRF-85582D was established in May 2002. There was an amendment to this version made in June 2006. It was superceded by version E in October 2012.

MIL-PRF-85582C was one of the earlier versions, established in June 1997.

MIL-PRF-85582 Types

  • Type I: Conventional formulation, standard pigments
  • Type II: Low infrared reflectance, used in special applications where minimising detection is critical

Classes

  • Class C1 - Barium chromate based corrosion inhibitors
  • Class C2 - Strontium chromate based corrosion inhibitors
  • Class N - Non-chromate based corrosion inhibitors
